Fish for people

Mark 1:16-17 As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, "Follow me and I will make you fish for people."

You know, it's funny - that sentence could be taken a couple different ways that don't make any sense. Jesus says:
- "I will make you FISH for PEOPLE." = i.e. you might be more helpful as fish.
- "I will MAKE you fish for people." = i.e., fish for people, or else.
Awkward retranslations... my dad would echo this, and complain about the loss of the King James Version. It's true; it's hard to beat "I will make you fishers of men." I'm such a dork.

I'm doing better. Not because of throwing cups - maybe just better sleep?

I went to Shedd Aquarium yesterday with a friend, which was a nice escape. Fish are so calming. Beluga whales have this giant foreheads, and they're this bright grey-white. And as the dolpins swim by you in the underwater viewing windows, you can see how beat-up their skin is. They just look so smooth from far away. Shedd has a really terrific Amazon exhibit - with mangroves, an anaconda, and lots of clear, brownish water (no piranhas, though). I never knew there were sting rays in the Amazon. And another is on coral reefs in the Philippines - with tanks that go over your head, one a dark dark violet! It was so visually beautiful. I'm not sure I learned anything scientific, unfortunately... I was a bit distracted.

They called their dolphin show a "marine mammal presentation," which seemed pretentious. But it really was more of a presentation than a show... must everything be educational??? I think I'm just ready to be done with school. I have one more 3-page paper, so I'm almost there.

This week is going to be somewhat insane. I have two 2-hour rehearsals, one for graduation and one for ordination. I have a 1.5 hour talk with my bishop. The Presiding Bishop is speaking at graduation, and we're having a 2 hour meeting with her, too. And there are a ton of various goodbye events and parties. It will be tiring, but lots of good stuff. After graduation, there will be family in friends in town to enjoy. I'll deacon at St. Paul and the Redeemer on Sunday. Then Mom and I are going to Michigan to hide out for a few days by the lake.

Then, I will find a job.

You forgot "I will make you fish FOR people" = "I will make you (into) fish. So beware of the people."

These are endless, and endlessly fun. Our Sr. Warden loves them, too. Told me that the church should be in support of human cloning becuase the bible tells us to go, therefore, and MAKE disciples."

    Cheers,
