The scary cupboard

This cupboard is at the end of a hallway in the seminary basement. It gives me the heebie-jeebies. Last fall, I was wandering around alone, exploring. I walked right up to this little door and just opened it, curious. It was dark in there, this cool strange air blew all around me, and suddenly every muscle in my body just seized up. Yikes! I think I pretty much ran all the way back to the laundry room. It's like a labyrinth down there, I've gotten lost a couple times, looking for the change machine, and have turned a corner and seen that little door spring up in front of me - and I stop in my tracks, my heart beating. Minotaur, anyone? I should start bringing a ball of string with me to the change machine.

Is this totally crazy? I had to swallow hard to even take a picture of it. But I'm hoping that taking the photo, posting it, and writing about it, will exorcize some of my crazy terror. Any other Seabury people have stories about this thing? Maybe sometime before June I'll get someone else to go down there with me and have another look. I'll let you know.

  1. Heidi, It's probably an ash cleanout from an upstairs fireplace. In old fireplaces there is a tiltable brick in the back where you pushed all the ash. It then fell into a box in the basement foundation of the chimney. You would then periodically clean it out through the little door.

You know, in the library basement there's a room with a little half-doorway into the undercroft of the chapel. And in there... lies Charles Palmerston Anderson!

    His body.

  5. I've never seen this. You're going to have to show me where it is. . . if you dare!
